Savaneta & San Nicolas
Southern Aruba with historic coastal towns, local culture and a distinctive arts scene.

History
Savaneta served as Aruba's first capital until 1797 and retains a small-scale coastal character. San Nicolas expanded rapidly in the twentieth century around the oil industry and the international community it attracted.
As the refinery economy changed, culture gained a larger role. Murals and events have given San Nicolas a new identity as the island's cultural capital.
Character and living
The region feels more local and spacious than Noord. Seafood restaurants and quiet residential areas line the coast, while San Nicolas provides shops, schools and urban services.
Oranjestad and the hotel area are farther away, balanced by short trips to southern beaches and a strong local identity.
