Pietermaai & Scharloo
Historic city districts with restored mansions, hospitality and creative businesses.

History
Pietermaai and Scharloo developed from the eighteenth century beyond Punda's oldest fortifications. Prosperous merchants built town villas and mansions along the bay and Scharlooweg.
After periods of decline, many buildings have been restored and given new uses. The districts form part of protected historic Willemstad and reveal several layers of the trading city.
Character and living
Pietermaai is lively, with restaurants, small hotels and apartments. Scharloo is quieter and contains offices, creative businesses, street art and historic homes.
The balance of nightlife, tourism and residential use varies greatly by street. Noise, parking pressure and listed-building status are therefore important considerations.
